Frequently Asked Questions
What phones does RipReader work with?#
iOS: iPhones running iOS 18 or later. Most iPhones from the last few years work fine. If your phone is older or jailbroken or stuck on iOS 17, the App Store will tell you it's not compatible.
Android: Only Pixel 6 and newer. RipReader needs high frame rate camera access through an API surface that, in practice, only the Pixel line exposes consistently. Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, OnePlus, Sony, and other Android phones do not currently work, and Google Play will block install on those devices.
If your phone is showing "not compatible" on the Play Store, that's why.
Is RipReader available in my country?#
iOS and Android should both be live worldwide on Google Play.
If the store says it's not available in your country, please open a Discord thread or email support@sarulian.com with the country and the store you're trying to use, and I'll look into it.
What are the best conditions to use RipReader in?#
- Outdoors in daylight with no trees or other obstructions above the camera.
- Discs that are not fully opaque or fully transparent, with some surface features (like a logo, writing, or graphic).
None of my throws are getting RPM (spin) readings. What's wrong?#
Spin measurement is the hardest of the three metrics to capture. It needs:
- Good lighting. Outdoor light is ideal. Direct backlight (sun behind the disc), deep shade, or low light at dawn or dusk reduce the read rate sharply.
- A disc whose surfaces have enough visible texture or contrast for the algorithm to track rotation. Plain solid colors with no logo or pattern read worse than discs with a clear stamp or pattern.
If you get speed and distance reliably but spin is failing, lighting and disc texture are almost always the cause.
The app fails to detect my throws in low light, especially with dark discs.#
Same root cause as the spin question above. The capture pipeline relies on visual contrast between the disc and the background. Black or very dark discs against a dim sky or low ambient light fall below the contrast threshold for reliable detection.
What helps:
- Throw with the sky or a brighter background behind the disc rather than trees or shaded terrain.
- Add more light to the environment. Indoors tends to have low light compared to outdoors.
- Try turning on the flashlight toggle in the capture screen.
This is on the roadmap for improvement. If you have an issue, go to the throw details screen and click "Report Issue".
I'm stuck on the "Place Phone" screen and nothing happens when I try to capture a throw.#
In version 1.4.0 (May 2026) and later, this screen surfaces a clear error if the permissions it needs are missing. If you're on an older version, please update.
If you're on the current version and still stuck, the two most common causes are:
- Location permission is off or set to "Never." Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RipReader, and set it to "While Using the App." Then restart capture.
- Compass Calibration is off. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → System Services (at the bottom) → Compass Calibration, and turn it on.
The phone needs to be lying flat on the ground (face up, screen toward the sky) with the rear camera pointing up. If permissions are correct and orientation is right, the screen will advance to "Ready" within a second or two.
How does RipReader compare to UDisc?#
Different tools. UDisc is a round tracking and course tool. RipReader is a field work tool. The two coexist fine, and a lot of users have both.
If you want to track scores, find courses, manage leagues, and log rounds, use UDisc. If you want to measure throws, work on speed and spin, log field work sessions, and dial in specific discs, use RipReader.
How do I delete my data?#
All throw data, videos, and session history are stored locally on your device. Uninstalling the app or clearing its storage removes everything.
